Table Mountain/Valley of the Moon
September 14,  2003
I headed off this morning in search of old adventures. Its been a while since I could lock the hubs in my local hills, so I got in touch with my brother-in-law and decided to do a little off roading.

I headed East to the hills near Jacumba, First to the North side of I8 up around Table Mountain following the trails back to the Carrizo Gorge over look. I have not been back in this area in over three years and it was nice to see that the trail was a little worse for wear after the last few rainy seasons.(I like ruts and stuff)

We later crossed the Highway and headed up in to The Valley of the Moon, Smugglers Cave area. Where their are a few old mines and a bunch of old trails to spend the day driving.
I don't suggest that anyone alone in a bone stock rig drive the Table Mountain area. It's not that it can't be done but some of the trail can pose a problem for a inexperienced driver without the guidance of a spotter. Most of the truly rough stuff has bypasses but I have seen many people stuck out here in the past, so just be warned.

The Valley of the Moon is not so bad. There are some rough sections of trail to keep a look out for. On weekends you can usually expect to see others, so that might be a good thing if you get caught out there unprepared.
