General Patton Museum February 7, 2004
Perched at the top of Chiriaco Summit sits the George S. Patton memorial museum. This site was the entrance to Camp Young, Command post for the desert training center where in 1942 Patton began training his men to fight German aggression in north Africa. The camp at one time encompassed a area over 18,000 square miles.
I wasn't even aware that the museum existed until I past it on the way to Eagle Mountain. I knew it would be a shame not to stop on the return trip home. The exhibits are well thought out and each one shares a wealth of knowledge. I was glad to have my two Sons and little Brother with me because this is a great way to put their hands on true history.
If you are ever traveling interstate 10 near Indio, CA. do yourself a favor, stop in and take a look around, and take a moment to remember those that have fallen on foreign soil who are forever young so that we may be forever free.
"No poor bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor bastard die for his"
