1985 Toyota 4x4 SR5 Pick-Up
My truck of choice for exploring areas where terrain may pose a problem and when I need to pack gear for many days of boon docking is my 85 SR5 standard cab 4x4 aka "The Eyesore".
The Eyesore has the venerable 22RE 4 cylinder engine. I have just over 20,000 miles on the engine. It's running a 5speed manual tranny and stock transfer case. The front diff has a Detroit True-Trac and the rear has a Detroit Locker with 4.56 gears. There is a total of seven inches of lift and to help keep the tires out of the fenders at full flex, the front end is moved forward 3/4 of a inch. The tires are 33x12.50r15 BF Goodrich Radial Mud Terrains. I carry a 33x9.50r15 Mud Terrain under the bed and up to two full size spares in the bed if needed. Armor consists of home built nerf bars and rear bumper and a All-Pro off road front bumper cradling a Warn 9000i winch. Keeping the Winch powered is a Optima red-top battery. A three core radiator used for a turbo engine keeps the truck running cool at any speed during the Death Valley Summers. Being roll-over tested I opted for a four point in-cab cage so that next time it's upside down the roof won't shape itself around my head. I also added a Tacoma 60/40 bench and Shell with a foam bed and fluorescent lighting, and a bed rail supported roof rack to carry more gear. I estimate I can boon dock for at least 10 days with out resupply.
The Eyesore has moved on to a new owner, and can be seen out, and about in the areas around Ridgecrest, Ca.
1998 Toyota 4 Runner 4x4
Now when the wife comes along or I want to travel in comfort we drive a 98 SR5 4Runner 4x4. It has the 3.4 V6 and auto tranny. Mostly stock with a set of 265/70r16 BF Goodrich Radial All Terrain tires.
The old98 was a fine backroad runner, but has stepped aside to make room for the new FJ Cruiser.
1981 Toyota 4x4 SR-5 Pick-Up
The ride that started it all for me. My first 4x4 when I was 16 years old was my Dad's old 81 Toy. I used to sneak off to the local mountains whenever I got a chance in this truck. I learned the ins and outs of offroading in this rig and no matter how much I beat it up, she never gave up the ghost. This truck ran a 22-R 4banger and 5-speed transmission, 4 inch leaf springs and 3 inch body lift left plenty of room for the 33 inch BFG Mud T-A's. She's nothing but a memory now, but the memories are fine ones indeed.
1989 Dodge Power-Ram 250 4x4
AKA "The Lead Sled" or "The Montana Mauler" This beast ran a 360cid and a 4-speed auto. It burned oil, and gas, and could not fight it's way up a Glamis sand dune if it tried.
1967 Ford Bronco
The "money-pit" was my High School sweetheart from Hell. No matter how much I spent on her, she always needed something bigger and better to keep me in her graces.
By the time I sold Her off to a Bronco club She had a built fuel injected 351W that once served duty in a 69 Mustang Mach-one. The old three on the tree tranny was upgraded with a Hurst floor mounted speed shifter and the Dana 20 T-case was stock.
33 inch BFG Mud TA's spun on the rear 9inch via 4:56 gearing and the stock Dana 30 front axle was in need of new hubs whenever I put my foot down on the 350 dynoed ponies.
Last I heard, a magazine used the Bronco as a platform for a build-up, but I never really cared to confirm it.
