The idea for this page came to me during a hike up Surprise Canyon in May of 2003. I was suffering the effects of heat illness Big Time! Full on vomiting and could barely stand and all the other associated symptoms. I honestly did not know if I was going to make it out of the canyon on my own. All mainly because I was not drinking enough water.

So this little experience gave me the idea to do a little research into what I call Back Country Survival. I won't say it is Desert Survival because I would like it to be a little broader then that. I hope that with a few of the books and Magazines that I have collected and with the help of the World Wide Web I can compile a list of helpful hints to keep us all aware of how to protect ourselves. A lot of it may seem dumb but if you find yourself in a situation and one thing you read about here helped you then I feel it was all worth it.

This page I feel is of some importance to those of you from other Countries that are planning a trip to Death Valley or any other area of the US. I Have received many e-mails from people abroad asking info on their planned trip and many hits to the site from many Countries so I know they are heading to our Deserts and many times what they might have expected to see was not what they got.
